Equinox brings Heat Packs

Something we’ve been following for sometime now is the relationship between female dogs going into estrus as the Spring or Fall equinox approach. While Ayuda hasn’t conducted a true study regarding this observation, it certainly appears to be consistent.

Over the last two weeks in Panajachel there have been at least 6 females running the streets while in heat which means there are packs of crazy male dogs running with them.  No one wants to claim any of them as their pet even though they are recognized as dogs with homes!

All three of the males in this photo have homes. The female has been picked up, sterilized, vaccinated, and treated for parasites as well as for the wounds to one eye, her head and ears.

The little Chihuahua is lucky he didn’t get beat up by the big males!

The current Ayuda veterinary intern, Stephanie Garcia Cruz is putting lots of extra time in providing humane education program. She appeared on a local television program, has been on a Radio Solola twice this month, and gave presentations to two school groups.

CLINIC NEWS

We had another terrific turnout in Panajachel on 5 September. Our stellar team of volunteers included Betty and Vicky at the intake desk, Rodri, Esmeralda, Emily, Grant, Ingrid, Bea, Susan, Geoff, Gregorio, Harold and Iva helping with prep, recovery, and puppy calming. It was a good day for the animals!

Our next stop was up the mountain to Godinez.  Although it was a slower than normal day due to the town’s annual fair, we still had wonderful help from the municipality.

Last up for September was Santa Cruz La Laguna and it was another big one! Big thanks to Sheri for pitching in at the intake desk and recovery.

Boris and Natasha went to a dedicated Ayuda volunteer who will bring them to a clinic for sterilization when ready. We only allow people who are regular, well-known volunteers to adopt animals before they receive their sterilization package. Why? ‘Cause Selaine knows where they live!

Foster Care Update

Dulce will be ready for adoption in about 1 month. She had her hip surgery on 28 Sep and needs quiet time to heal.

Luci is READY TO GO! Her leg/hip were not broken and she is putting pressure on the paw. 

Approximately 3 weeks old when rescued from the riverbed in Pana, these two will be ready for new homes in a few more weeks.

Momma and her 7 pups are resting, growing, and safe. They will be ready for adoption after the entire family receives the Ayuda sterilization package.
