Little Can Be Done For Litha

A number of people have written to ask what happened to the dog with the broken leg which Steve was trying to track down.   We have decided to call this dog Litha.

Calcified areas suggest the break is old

Calcified areas suggest the break is old

Litha continues to run a three legged hobble on Calle Arboles.   From the way the front part of her front leg dangles, it has all outward appearances that this was a very recent break.   However, after XRays and examination by Dr. Miguel at Zoo Mascota, it has been determined that this break could be as old as one year.  Aside from being under-nourished and in need of worming, Litha is generally healthy and has learned how to get around and survive the streets for 5 or more years.

While a first impression from looking at this animal is to put her out of her suffering, the team made a conscious decision to sterilize, vaccinate, treat for parasites, and then release her back on the street and where Steve was able to catch her.   But she needs to be built back up, especially from recently having a litter.   Given all circumstances, her recovery from an amputation is questionable, as is her capability to adjust to a new sense of balance.    Her broken leg will not be amputated.

Decisions like this are very heart wrenching and difficult.   But at least Litha is now on Ayuda’s radar.   After she has been treated and released, Ayuda volunteers will keep a close vigilence on her to make sure she is fed properly (with nutrients such as vitamins to build her up) and as happy and healthy as any street dog can be.

We invite all comments and email on this very difficult case and delicate subject matter.

As painful as it looks, Litha can still put weight on her front leg.
